Canola Seeding Progress in W. Cda Varies, CCC Says

WINNIPEG, MB, May 08, 2008 (Resource News International via COMTEX) -- Planting of the 2008 canola crop varied widely across Western Canada during the week ended May 7, according to the Canola Council of Canada's latest crop update.

The report said canola seeding occurred in parts of southern Manitoba, southeastern and south-central Saskatchewan, and most of southern Alberta. Limited canola seeding occurred in most other areas due to cool and/or wet weather.

Central and northern areas of the Peace region of Alberta are still quite wet and general field work is not expected for at least another week, the CCC said.

Pockets of dryness remain in southwestern Manitoba, parts of central and southeast Saskatchewan, and parts of central Alberta.

Soil temperatures have slowly improved in some areas over the past week but remain cool in others, the CCC said. Although weather forecasts for many areas indicate seasonable daily highs, nightly frosts are still forecast.

High flea beetle counts have been reported in sticky traps near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan despite relatively cool weather, the report said.

The CCC said that with a few last-minute seeding decisions still to be made, it is imperative that growers do not seed any de-registered varieties that may impact export markets. Also, older seed treatments that contain lindane must not be used.
