HILLSBOROUGH, Nov 08, 2009 (The Chapel Hill News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Mayor Tom Stevens won a third term after running unopposed Tuesday.

Incumbents Frances Dancy and Mike Gering held off challenger Bryant Kelly Warren Jr. for the two town commissioner seats.

Just 359 votes were cast in the mayoral race, including 18 write-in votes, in the 5,500-resident county seat.

"We're all very proud to be Americans but sometimes it'd be nice if more people exercised their privilege and responsibility to vote," Stevens said.

All three commissioner candidates emphasized growth and sustainable development but acknowledged that a bad economy will make it difficult.

"I really want the economy to improve so we can see some of the things that we had already approved put into place," said Dancy, who won her fourth term with 34 percent of the votes. "I would like to bring more businesses in to come and improve our tax base."

The challenge, Gering said, is doing more in an area where income varies.

"Our population is more diverse than nearby municipalities," said Gering, who won his third term with 42 percent of the votes. "We have to find new ways to improve our economic base without raising the cost of living for the people who live here."

Stevens said improving the town's connectivity is important to him. He said he looks forward to the building of a railroad station in the town.

The incumbents said it was good to hear ideas from Warren, who sits on the town's planning and parks and recreation board.

But in the end, they said they were happy to be working with the same team.

"In the big sweep of things, it's following the same course we have been on," Stevens said. "We have been providing leadership to help bring people together."
