District govts responsible for controlling wheat flour price: Magsi

KARACHI, May 09, 2008 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- Sindh Minister for Food Mir Nadir Ali Khan Magsi has said that the district governments were responsible for controlling the surging price of wheat flour. Talking to media after presiding over a meeting with flourmills associations at his officer here on Thursday, he that the government had allowed flourmills to purchase wheat from two more districts of Nawabshah and Sanghar. .

The food minister said that some 100000 bags of wheat from 1000 trucks had been recovered during raids at different places to end wheat smuggling. The minister said that government would implement a mechanism to control smuggling and hoarding of wheat. He said that his ministry would set up a check post at Kathore to check wheat smuggling. . He said that now the government would lodge FIR against those involved in smuggling and hoarding of wheat. He said the flourmills should purchase wheat without involvement of middle men so that they could buy the commodity at lower price and ensure provision of flour to people also at lower prices.

To a query he said that wheat had been smuggled from the Sindh to Afghanistan border in Balochistan, but now government had controlled it. To another question he said that Sindh government had stocked 422,000 tons wheat against the target of 600,000 tons. To yet another query, he said the government would implement official support rates of wheat.
