Saskatchewan Harvest Remains Behind Schedule, Govt Says

WINNIPEG, MB, Nov 06, 2009 (Resource News International via COMTEX) -- A slight improvement in weather conditions has allowed producers in some parts of Saskatchewan to get back in their fields, but harvest operations overall remain behind schedule, according to the crop update from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture for the week ended November 2, but released only on November 6.

Harvest progress was pegged as being 80% complete, which compares with the previous report's harvest pace of 79%. In the Southeast region of Saskatchewan, 86% of the crops had been harvested, in the Southwest, 97%; East-Central 73%; West-Central 81%; Northeast 68% and in the Northwest 68%, the report said.

Wet fields and roads in some areas of the northern and eastern regions have made it difficult to get into the fields, the report said. In the wet areas, producers were hoping for freezing temperatures to firm up the ground.

Canola and flaxseed were being harvested at 13% to 19% moisture and cereals at 18% to 25% moisture, Sask Ag said. Dry weather is needed to complete the harvest.

The harvest of spring wheat was 80% done, durum 92%, oats 61%, barley 86%, flaxseed 35%, canola 70%, mustard 89%, canaryseed 62% and chickpeas 86% finished, the report said.

Saskatchewan Agriculture said producers were combining when they can, drying grain, baling straw, hauling bales, cleaning corrals and applying fall fertilizer when weather allows.
