Nov 07, 2009 (The Fresno Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a health alert to consumers warning them to not feed their pets pig ears and beef hooves because of possible salmonella contamination. The pet treats are made by Pet Carousel in Sanger. The products were distributed nationwide in bulk and retail packages and sold in pet food and retail chain stores. Although no illnesses connected to the products have been reported, FDA officials are advising consumers who may have the products not to handle or feed them to their pets. The pig ear products are sold under the brand names Doggie Delight and Pet Carousel. And the beef products were packaged under the name Choo Hooves, Dentley's Doggie Delight and Pet Carousel. Pets with salmonella infections may become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may only experience a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.
