Orange sees a bright future in internet usage

Nov 13, 2009 (Evening Standard - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Demand for mobile internet access and games and pictures on cellphones appears to be recession proof, the head of Orange has declared.

Olaf Swantee said that the number of customers using 30 megabytes of data a month -- enough for regular emailing and light internet usage -- was still rising, having reached 24 percent, up from 17 percent in February.

"There are only so many hours in the day that people can talk," he said. "But non-voice revenues seem to be quite recession-proof, with music services very successful. They have exceeded expectations."

Swantee added that revenues from mobile voice usage would continue growing in emerging markets but would stabilise in mature markets such as the UK.
