WASHINGTON, May 08, 2008 (ASCRIBE NEWS via COMTEX) -- Keith Collins, who served for 15 years as Chief Economist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will participate in a media teleconference on Friday May 9 to discuss the interplay of tight commodity crop markets, the ethanol boom, and the potentially dramatic impacts that poor weather conditions could have over the next few years on the U.S. and global food systems. The teleconference will begin with his remarks on the eagerly awaited USDA world supply and demand estimates and crop production reports that will be released earlier the same day. Collins will be followed by authoritative observations on crop-growing conditions this season by climatologists from the country s three top corn-producing states: Al Dutcher (Nebraska), S. Elwynn Taylor (Iowa) and Jim Angel (Illinois). Bruce Babcock, director of the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development at Iowa State University, will discuss his recent research on the potential impact of severely adverse weather on the production and prices of corn and other commodity crops.
