Nov 07, 2009 (Grand Forks Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- GIRLS SWIMMING Red River third, Central fifth at EDC FARGO -- Grand Forks Central's Ali Church won two individual events and swam on a first-place relay to lead Grand Forks swimmers at the Eastern Dakota Conference meet Saturday. Grand Forks Red River took third place with 321 1/2 points, while Central was fifth with 283. Church won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 55.96 seconds. She also won the 500 free-style in 5:16.43 and the 200 freestyle relay team of Alex Eades, Gabriela Kostelina, Erin Burnham and Church took first in 1:44.15. Kostelina took third in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 butterfly. "It was a tough meet for us because we're smaller," said Central and Red River coach Bryan Walls, who was named the EDC coach of the year. "It was a good showing going into state next weekend." Mirna Kojic led the Roughriders with a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 25.42 sec-onds and swam a leg on the first-place 400 freestyle relay team along with Addy DiCristina, Erin Grabanski and Courtney Fisk. Jamie Skavlem won the 100 backstroke in 1:02.75 for Red River. "She didn't start swimming until she was a freshman," Walls said of Skavlem, now a junior. "That was the biggest upset. She's a relatively young swimmer. That says quite a bit about her talent." The Knights' Church and Kostelina were named to the all-conference team, as were the Roughriders' Breanna Schmidt, Grabanski, Fisk, DiCristina, Skavlam and Kojic. The state meet will be held next Saturday in Grand Forks at the Hyslop Pool.
