EDITORIAL: Boise State, Idaho share common goal: education

Nov 13, 2009 (The Idaho Statesman - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- For the truest believers in blue and orange or silver and gold, BSU-Idaho isn't a rivalry renewed. It just is. This year, though, the rivalry has more buzz, and Saturday's meeting at Bronco Stadium is even more an event than usual. Undefeated Boise State, at 9-0, hopes to remain in contention for a high-prestige and big-money Bowl Championship Series berth. Resurgent Idaho brings a surprising 7-3 record to the blue turf.

Those kinds of stakes stir up passion. The only cooler thing? Channeling rivalry week fervor into a passion for higher education.

After all, BSU and U of I have more in common than their fans would comfortably admit.

Both schools are trying mightily to meet student demand, which only increases during a recession. Both schools are struggling with budget cuts that have become more routine than last resort.

Both schools are seeking the right balance between lucrative research and the student experience. And both are straining to keep college affordable -- in a state where too many high school grads bypass higher education.

These are heady times on the gridiron, yet trying times in the classroom.

On Saturday afternoon, let's celebrate success on the field. After the final whistle, let's champion the cause of higher education.
