KARANGANYAR, C Java, Apr 28, 2008 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- The government will not import sugar this year as domestic sugar production plus existing stocks are enough to meet national demand for sugar, a state plantation official said. "The country's sugar production this year in addition to existing stocks are enough to meet domestic demand for sugar. So the government will not import sugar this year," production director of state plantation company Nusantara IX, Edi Hermawan Sobiran, said here on Friday. He said national sugar stocks kept in warehouses now totaled 350 tons while sugar production in 2008 was expected to reach 183,000 tons. The sugar output would be the result of the processing of 2.5 million tons of sugarcane planted on 35,000 hectares spread in a number of regions, he added. To increase domestic sugar production, state sugarcane plantation companies , in cooperation with sugarcane farmers, would keep on improving their productivity, he said. About refined sugar, he said the product was not to be found in Central Java as it had been banned by the government. (ANTARA) |
