May 09, 2008 (The Leader-Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Woman charged with sexual assault BARRON -- An 18-year-old Rice Lake woman has been charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy last fall, according to Barron County Court records. Heather L. Meyer is charged with second-degree sexual assault of a child. The charge has a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison. She is scheduled to make her initial court appearance Wednesday. According to court records: The boy told police he and Meyer had sexual intercourse several times, dating back to last fall. He said he told Meyer he was 17 but admitted he was only 14 after he found out she was pregnant. Meyer admitted to police about the sexual activity. YMCA bus driver falls asleep at the wheel A small YMCA bus caused a minor crash near Luther Hospital Thursday morning after the driver fell asleep. Michelle E. Hines, 22, 903 Graham Ave., was driving the empty child care bus east on West Madison Street near Whipple Street when she fell asleep. The bus then traveled over the grass boulevard, knocking down two trees, striking a car stopped at the intersection and eventually coming to rest after striking and knocking over a light pole. Hines was cited. No one was injured. Colfax Rifle Range damaged by bullets MENOMONIE -- The Colfax Rifle Range reported electrical wires cut to a pavilion and damage caused by someone shooting a beam and the donation box with a rifle, according to the Dunn County Sheriff's Department. Charles Owen, secretary of the Colfax Sportsman's Club, reported the damage Wednesday. No dollar estimate was listed. One of the main beams of the pavilion was shot five or six times with a rifle. The donation box was shot four times. Signs in the parking lot were shot with a smaller caliber rifle and had minor damage. A trash bin also had a hole and a dent from bullets. The incident happened in the late winter or early spring, reports stated. Man in standoff to receive evaluation NEW AUBURN -- A person involved in a standoff with the Chippewa County Sheriff's Department on Sunday was sent to Sacred Heart Hospital for a mental evaluation. The man was taken into custody at 2:15 p.m. Sunday after a two-hour standoff with law enforcement. When officers arrived, family members had fled the residence, leaving the man alone in the house with a handgun. Chippewa County District Attorney Jon Theisen said he has not seen any reports, so it is unclear if the man will be charged with a crime stemming from the standoff. The man was not arrested. The domestic incident began at 12:15 p.m. at a home on the 27000 block of 100th Street in the town of Sampson, northeast of New Auburn. A youth went to a neighbor's home and reported that his stepfather was threatening to harm his mother. Man charged with assaulting teen girl BARRON -- A 57-year-old Cameron man has been charged with sexually assaulting a teenage girl in recent months, according to Barron County Court records. Lonnie R. Smith was recently charged with second-degree sexual assault. He was released on a $2,500 signature bond and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 20. The charge has a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison. A 15-year-old girl told police in late April that Smith had sexually assaulted her late last year or early this year. Smith denied the allegation, according to court records. Mail carriers food drive is Saturday On Saturday, Eau Claire mail carriers will participate in the 16th annual National Association of Letter Carriers National Food Drive. On their routes, the letter carriers will gather goods donated by customers and bring them to the post office. Volunteers will be on hand at the post office to weigh the food and prepare it for transportation to local pantries Feed My People Food Bank, St. Francis Food Pantry and The Salvation Army between noon and 4 p.m. For more information, call Dale Weibel at 829-2598. Eau Claire-based tour bus crashes CARTHAGE, Mo. -- An Eau Claire tour company's bus crashed Thursday, injuring three people. According to The Carthage Press: The tour bus from St. Paul, carrying 19 tourists, ran off the west side of Chapel Road at approximately 10 a.m. According to witnesses on the bus, the driver of the southbound Eau Claire-based Tourcos Northern tour bus was forced off the road by a northbound vehicle. The bus went off the west side of the road and traveled about 25 yards in the mud before coming to a stop, hitting a fence post and breaking the front windshield. The Carthage Fire Department removed the door with the Jaws of Life and helped all the passengers exit. The bottom of the door was wedged in the mud, forcing rescue workers to use the Jaws of Life. Three people sustained minor injuries. The group, which was on its way to Branson, Mo., was making a stop at the Precious Moments Park. Man gets prison for sixth DWI offense BARRON -- A 50-year-old Chetek man was sentenced Tuesday in Barron County Court to two years in prison for his sixth offense of driving while intoxicated. Terrance S. Grover also was placed on two years of extended supervision when sentenced by Judge James Babler. Grover's driver's license was revoked for three years, and he was ordered to receive alcohol treatment and pay $1,234 in fines. Grover was arrested on Oct. 13 in the city of Rice Lake for driving while intoxicated; he pleaded guilty to the charge on Dec. 28. Grover had five previous drunken-driving convictions since 1989, according to court and police records.
