Kansas Hay Market Report
 
Ground alfalfa movement:  Southwest/South Central 
Tonnage: 13,593/4,073     Last week: 12,737/4,535    Last year: 10,536/2,578
 
   Hay trade slow. Demand moderate to strong for grinding alfalfa, alfalfa 
pellets and dairy alfalfa, moderate for prairie hay and stock cow quality hay. 
A cooler than normal Spring so far is holding back the alfalfa and other 
forages. Swathing of alfalfa has started South of Wichita, yields are light 
quality is good, some did get rained on last night in the windrow. Supplemental 
feeding continues but is declining as cattle graze new growth. Pastures in 
Western Kansas are slow due to cool temperatures and dry conditions. If you have

Southwest Kansas
   Dairy and grinding alfalfa steady. Movement moderate to active. Alfalfa: 
Horse, small square, old crop 180.00; Dairy, Supreme 160.00-175.00; Premium 
150.00-170.00; Good, 120.00-150.00; new crop Dairy contracted 95.00-112.00 
standing in the field. Utility-Fair grinding alfalfa at the edge of the field, 
105.00-115.00, a little new crop contracted 110.00-120.00. Ground and delivered 
locally to feedlots and dairies, 125.00-135.00, new crop contracted 140.00-
145.00 clock (12 month contracts). The week of 4/21-26, 13,593T of grinding 
alfalfa and 1,926T of dairy alfalfa were delivered. 

South Central Kansas
   Dairy and grinding alfalfa steady, alfalfa pellets steady to 5.00 higher.  
Movement moderate to active. Alfalfa: Horse, scarce, small square 200.00-210.00, 
mid or large square 175.00-185.00; Dairy, Supreme 145.00-165.00; Premium 130.00-
145.00; Good, 100.00-130.00. Utility-Fair grinding alfalfa at the edge of the 
field 70.00-85.00, 85.00-95.00 delivered, Utility 65.00-70.00. Ground and 
delivered locally to feedlots 105.00-120.00. The week of 4/21-26, 4,073T of 
grinding alfalfa and 950T of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Alfalfa pellets: Sun 
Cured 15 pct protein 155.00-160.00; Sun Cured 17 pct 160.00-180.00; 
Dehydrated 17 pct 212.00.

Southeast Kansas
   Alfalfa, brome and prairie hay steady. Movement slow to moderate. Alfalfa, 
scarce: Horse and goat, small or mid square 165.00. Dairy alfalfa, Premium, 
125.00; Good, Stock cow 100.00-125.00. Bluestem: Good, small squares 90.00 to 
mostly 100.00, mid and large squares 80.00-90.00, a little 100.00, large rounds 
45.00-60.00. Brome: Small square Good 90.00-110.00, Good mid and large squares 
85.00-100.00, Good large round 50.00-60.00, Fair large round 35.00-45.00. CWF 
Grass Mulch, large round 50.00.

Northwest Kansas
   Dairy and grinding alfalfa steady. Movement slow to moderate. Alfalfa: Horse, 
small squares 180.00-200.00, Mid squares 160.00-175.00; Dairy, Supreme 140.00-
150.00; Premium 125.00-135.00; Good, 110.00-125.00; Good Stock cow 95.00-115.00. 
Utility-Fair grinding alfalfa at the edge of the field 90.00-100.00; Ground and 
delivered to feedlots and dairies 120.00-140.00.

North Central-Northeast Kansas
   Dairy and grinding alfalfa, prairie hay and brome steady. Movement moderate. 
Alfalfa: Horse small square 185.00-200.00, Mid square 165.00-185.00; Dairy, 
Supreme 140.00-170.00; Premium 130.00-150.00, Good 95.00-135.00. Utility-Fair 
grinding alfalfa at the edge of the field, 70.00-80.00, alfalfa ground-on-the-
truck 80.00-100.00. Grass hay: Bluestem small square, Good 90.00-100.00, Mid 
square 75.00-90.00, large rounds 45.00-60.00. Brome: Good, small square, 90.00-
110.00, Mid squares, 80.00-100.00, large round, 50.00-60.00, fair large round 
40.00-50.00. Straw small square 2.50-3.50/bale, large bales 45.00-60.00/T.
