Weekly Missouri Weighted Average Feeder Cattle Report (05/09/08)
Receipts: 33,359 Week Ago: 30,965 Year Ago: 26,283
Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers traded steady to 2.00
higher. Holsteins sold 2.00 to 4.00 lower on a light test. Although cattle
numbers are expected to lighten considerably, receipts are still running
close to or even above average. Buyers were noted as exercising more caution
this week when selecting for flesh conditions, particularly on new crop calves.
Many pasture acres throughout the state have been lost to row crops and as a
result an above average number of cows have made their way to town this spring
as producers continue to trim the size of their herds. Surplus grass growth has
been slowed by a wet and cool start to the growing season and in many areas of
the state that growth is not keeping up with consumption. Corn planters are
still parked for the most part. Some farmers in the northern and southeastern
parts of the state were able to get in their fields early in the week but
mid-week rains forced them back out nearly as quickly. However, with modern
technology much ground can be covered in a short time and while the delayed
start is cause for concern, itÂ’s not yet time to panic. Direct slaughter cattle
trade at a standstill as of 8 a.m. Friday with producers asking for more money
after triple digit grains for Live Cattle contracts at the CME on Thursday.
