Senators oppose ban on inter-provincial movement of wheat

ISLAMABAD, May 08, 2008 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- Senators, particularly hailing from Balochistan and North West Frontier Province, on Wednesday expressed their resentment over the ban on the inter-provincial movement of wheat by the government describing it an unjust and discriminatory decision.

Speaking on a point of order, Senator Haji Adeel told the House that the ban on the movement of wheat will worsen the situation in other provinces, adding that if the ban was not lifted, the government will have to pay the subsidy of Rs 5 billion this year on wheat.

He said the people are facing utmost difficulty while transporting the wheat even from one city to another. He alleged that Punjab government is planning to sell wheat to other provinces at the higher rates after making huge stock.

Sardar Jamal Khan told the House that the farmers of Tribal Tehsil of Dera Ghazi Khan were treated badly while transporting the wheat outside the city.

He said the government should impose ban on the movement of wheat across the borders not within the provinces or cities. He urged the government to ensure better coordination among the provinces and devise the policies, which are applicable.

Senator Azam Khan Swati said his province is suffering acute shortage of wheat and added that the ban on flow of wheat should be lifted immediately.

Speaking on the occasion, Senator Wali Mohammed said the needs of the population of Balochistan province is 124 kg per head while the province is getting only one-third of the required quantity.

He said due to ban on the flow of wheat, the situation in the province is getting worse by the day and if the decision is not reversed, the situation would deteriorate. He also suggested that the ban should be imposed on the movement of wheat across the borders to stop smuggling.
