Vandal fans seeking gear head to temporary U of I bookstore in Boise

Nov 12, 2009 (The Idaho Statesman - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Hey, Treasure Valley fans of the Idaho Vandals -- want to hang out with like-minded people, escape the orange-and-blue iconography all over town and beef up your Vandal wardrobe before Saturday's rivalry game?

You have a day and a half to get down to the Idaho and 9th street area in Downtown Boise and check out the temporary University of Idaho bookstore -- a little piece of Moscow in Idaho's capital city.

There you can find Idaho Vandal golf balls, baby bibs, socks, pint glasses, Christmas ornaments, dog leashes, T-shirts, winter hats and gloves, blankets, jerseys, and stuffed animals. You can buy a pin with a black circle and slash through the Boise State logo.

The University of Idaho opens a temporary store in Boise every year before the annual rivalry game. This is the first time the bookstore has rented a storefront in Downtown Boise. The store, located at 821 Idaho Street, will be open until 7 p.m. Thursday and between 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. It will move to the Qwest Arena on Saturday for U of I alumni events.

On Thursday morning, a steady stream of Vandal fans browsed through racks of gear.

"This is the busiest we have been -- customers have been nonstop since we opened (Wednesday)," said Shelby Silflow, the buyer for the bookstore. "We were pretty busy two years ago, but I bet we will do about 15 to 20 percent more business this year than ever."

Silflow says she expects to sell as much as $80,000 worth of Vandal merchandise in four days. Silflow brought eight other bookstore employees to Boise and two rental trucks full of merchandise.

"I didn't want to run out by Friday, so we brought as much as we could," Silflow said.

The most popular items so far are U of I flags for cars, a button with a black circle and line through the Boise State logo, and T-shirt which says "Boise is not a state" on the front and "Go Vandals" on the back, Silflow said.
